There are two closely related jaw-headache conditions TMJ (Temporal Mandibular Joint Dysfunction) and Bruxism.
Therapeutic massage of the facial and neck muscles is one of the best treatments for quick relief for both of these conditions.  During oral massage the muscles on the inside and outside of the jaw  are worked on with trigger point to relieve the pain.

WHAT IS TMJ DYSFUNCTION AND WHAT IS BRUXISM

TMJ is a common disorder of the temporalmandibular joint space and the muscles that control that area. This disorder is actually an imbalance in the jaw that, once aggravated, can cause facial muscles to go into spasm. Stress, teeth-grinding, poor posture, diet, and accidents may irritate this condition. Many people suffer from symptoms and referral pain that stem from the temporal mandibular joint such as: headaches, migraines, tinnitus (ear ringing), sinus problems, neck, shoulder and back pain.
Bruxism is usually brought on by stress, or extremely vivid dreams.  Bruxism is a pathological clenching and grinding of teeth that usually occurs during sleep. Bruxism is caused by the hyperactive contraction of the masticatory (chewing) muscles. Imagine any other muscles in our support and movement system kept under tight contraction for seven hours. Pathological hypertonus in these muscles will be formed, followed by restriction of range of motion, trigger point development, and other symptoms. With time, hypertonic condition in the masticatory muscles leads to the development of osteoarthritis in the TMJ, including negative effects on the articular meniscus. In such a case, the above-mentioned TMJ pathology starts producing severe headaches and painful "clicks."
The treatment of bruxism is usually monitored by a physician or dentist, and usually incorporates the use of muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications.  Those methods although quite effective only take care of the symptoms of jaw clenching and/or grinding.
Combined with stress management techniques like meditation and cardiovascular excercise, therapeutic massage to the jaw, neck, and upper back are a great long term way of managing and eliminating bruxism.
When making your appointment please mention that you want TMJ oral massage, because only four of our therapist are certified in it.  Dan, Heather, Angela and Iris.
